COVID-19 pandemic leaves 1.5 million children orphans

According to a report prepared by the International Medical Group, 1.5 million children have lost their parents, grandparents due to the coronavirus pandemic, The Lancet reveals.

However, scientists note that the real number of children who have lost one or two breadwinners at once may be higher.

The scientific report was prepared as a result of the analysis of data collected in 21 countries. We are talking about countries where about 77% of coronavirus deaths occur.

Comparing the data, the scientists concluded that in the first 14 months of the pandemic, more than 1.04 million children lost a father or mother. And 1.5 million lost parents, grandmothers, grandfathers, or guardians.

Scientists believe that a large number of orphans indicates the need for urgent action by the UN and individual states to help orphans cope with the psychological, social, and economic consequences of losing their parents and breadwinners.
