According to the Italian Ministry of Health, another 328 people died of coronavirus in the country in the last 24 hours, and the total death toll reached 100 003. Italy is the sixth country in the world where the death toll from the coronavirus has exceeded 100 000. There are 13 092 new cases of infection detected in the last 24 hours.
Italy was the first country in the West where exactly one year ago, on March 10, the strictest isolation was declared due to the coronavirus.
"We could never have imagined that a year later, we would again face an emergency where the official death toll would be close to 100 000," Prime Minister Mario Draghi stated. He thanked the citizens for patience and adhering to the rules and said that in the conditions of accelerated vaccination, it is possible to defeat the pandemic.
There are currently 5.5 million doses of the vaccine in Italy. The Prime Minister plans to speed up the vaccination process.
