Protesters in the U.S. city of Seattle defended themselves with umbrellas to avoid the police's pepper spray.

It is not the first time people used his method for protection. Last year pro-democracy rally participants used the same means of defense in Hong Kong.

In Seattle and several other U.S. cities, a curfew was declared due to the wave of protests.

About 500 members of the U.S. National Guard got dispatched to the site of the riots.
