Kyrgyzstan will conduct snap presidential elections on January 10, 2021, as the Central Election Commission decided.

On October 4, Kyrgyzstan held parliamentary elections with the involvement of 16 political parties.

CEC preliminary data sparked mass protests among the population, which escalated into riots in Bishkek and other major cities. Demonstrators seized the parliament building.

Only four pro-government parties reached the electoral threshold of 7%.

The protesters demanded a repeat election.

On October 9, President of Kyrgyzstan Sooronbai Jeenbekov introduced a state of emergency in Bishkek connected with the riots in the country.

On October 10, the Kyrgyz parliament expressed confidence in Prime Minister Sadyr Japarov and the new government.

On October 15, President of Kyrgyzstan Sooronbai Jeenbekov resigned.

On October 16, Bishkek lifted the state of emergency.
