The World Tobacco-free day is an annual campaign celebrated all over the world on May 31. The main accents of the day are the hazards caused by tobacco use aimed at promoting a decrease in consumption. Specialists assure people that one of the causes of death is smoking that can be prevented.

The date was established by the World Health Organization in 1987 to drag international attention to the deadly results of smoking.

According to the WHO, tobacco consumption is one of the most hazardous risks to health, taking the lives of over eight million people annually, out of which around seven million are smokers, and 1.2 million are passive smokers that breathe other people’s smoking.

Smoking causes myocardial infarction, cerebral hemorrhage, lung diseases, and others. Today, 80% of smokers live in countries of low and medium economics.

Smoking affects the environment. Tobacco residues contain over seven thousand toxic components, including carcinogenic. Two-thirds of fifteen billion cigarettes are absorbed by nature.
