A 40-year-old wedding cake piece by Prince Charles and Princess Diana has been sold at auction. The final price was 1 850 pound sterling, BBC reports.

Organizers had suggested that a piece of cake would sell for 500 pounds sterling, so the starting price became 300 pounds sterling. However, the price rose very quickly, and eventually, the trade stopped at 1 850.

The winner is an anonymous participant of the auction who lives in the city of Leeds.

The piece of cake was originally handed over to a member of the royal family, Moira Smith, who kept the confectionery in excellent condition.

She kept a piece of the cake in a tin jar with the inscription "Handle with Care - Prince Charles & Princess Diane's [sic] Wedding Cake" and the date, July 27, 1981.
