Russia's main demand will be to receive assurances that the North Atlantic Alliance will no longer expand eastwards and that NATO will not deploy missiles in Ukraine. However, the United States says there will be "no firm commitment" during the talks, and only security issues will be discussed.
According to the US State Department, US Deputy Secretary of State Wendy R. Sherman noted that Washington supports the principle that countries should independently choose which alliances to join.
Amid the threat of Russian invasion, military units in eastern Ukraine are fully mobilized. The US warns Russia that in case of invasion of Ukraine, Moscow will have to pay a significant price.
