In a call this week between US President Donald Trump and German Chancellor Angela Merkel, the two reportedly had heated disagreements on the topic of the Nord Stream 2 gas pipeline between Russia and Germany, cited by POLITICO referring on a reliable source.

Nord Stream 2 is a joint venture between Russia's Gazprom and five European companies.

Many countries oppose the project, in particular, Ukraine, Lithuania, Latvia, Poland, and the USA. Ukraine cares about the loss of income with the new line; Washington is interested in the promotion of its LNG in the European market.

The United States imposed sanctions on the pipeline companies in late 2019.

Germany criticized the act by Washington. Berlin mentioned that it considers the Nord Stream 2 a commercial project and rejects sanctions.

The German Chancellor, Angela Merkel, refused to participate in the G7 meeting planned in White House by President Trump, writes Politico.

"The Federal Chancellor thanks President Trump for his invitation to the G7 summit at the end of June in Washington. As of today, considering the overall pandemic situation, she cannot agree to her personal participation, to a journey to Washington," German government spokesman Steffen Seibert told POLITICO Friday.
