U.N. rejects weapon supply embargo extension on Iran

United Nations’ Security Council refused to go along with a U.S. proposal to extend an arms embargo against Iran that is due to expire in two months, writes Washington Post.

The resolution is supported by the United States and the Dominican Republic only, while Russia and China have dismissed the U.S. position, and eleven other United Nations countries have kept the option open.

The USA Secretary-General Mike Pompeo said that “The Security Council’s failure to act decisively in defense of international peace and security is inexcusable.”

“It rejected a reasonable resolution to extend the 13-year old arms embargo on Iran and paved the way for the world’s leading state sponsor of terrorism to buy and sell conventional weapons without specific U.N. restrictions in place for the first time in over a decade,” - he said.
