The number of people living in internal displacement because of armed conflict and violence reached 48 million globally. The highest number ever recorded, Cecilia Jimenez-Damary, the UN Special Rapporteur on the human rights of internally displaced persons, told the Third Committee of the UN General Assembly.
"The number of IDPs in the world due to armed conflict and violence has reached 48 million, the highest record ever," the Special Rapporteur said.
Amid the increasingly complex nature of armed conflicts and generalized violence, it has become more challenging to comply with international humanitarian law and human rights.
Jimenez-Damary noted that conflict situations and global violence might also be exacerbated by natural disasters, leading to population displacement.
