The debris of an American B-17 Flying Fortress bomber crashed 76 years ago on the Eyjafjallajökull glacier has appeared in Iceland. Due to the heat, decades later, fragments of aircraft on the glacier became visible.

The plane crash took place on September 16, 1944. The United States B-17 Flying Fortress bomber was on its way to England. The fighter plane landed at Keflavík International Airport in Iceland to refuel and crashed into a glacier because of the bad weather.

The plane fell on soft snow. One wing of the aircraft crashed, the engines caught fire, but all ten crew members on board survived and got evacuated. The plane could not be transported, so its parts were frozen on the Eyjafjallajökull glacier.

The locals do not want to get rid of the bomber fragments from the glacier because of the tourists.
