A group of experts will study the errors made through restoring the roof of the Gelati monastery complex.

The Georgian Ministry of Culture, Sports and Youth discussed the Gelati monastery complex issue and made specific decisions.

Minister Tea Tsulukiani, together with her deputies, met with a group of architects and restorers.

"The National Agency for the Protection of Cultural Heritage has been instructed to establish full-fledged communication with UNESCO and in a short time to invite experts of such specializations to Georgia, which, unfortunately, we do not have in our country.

By April 5, the National Agency for the Protection of Cultural Heritage was instructed to submit the project to restore the complex's roof, developed in 2008, and all the documentation, reflecting the work carried out earlier.

These materials will allow the ministry and Georgian architects-restorers to familiarize themselves with the mistakes made in the course of the work and, together with foreign experts, develop an action plan to correct them," the statement released by the Ministry reads.

The department plans to create a second group consisting of specialists in painting, which will salvage damaged frescoes.
