French screenwriter, director, and Oscar winner Jean-Claude Carrière has died at the age of 89; the TV channel BFMTV reports based on his son.

He had no specific disease and died in sleep at home.

Jean-Claude Carrière has written more than 140 screenplays, including "The Discreet Charm of the Bourgeoisie" (1972), "The Unbearable Lightness of Being" (1989), "Cyrano de Bergerac" (1990), "At Eternity's Gate" (2018).

As a director, he made the short film "Happy Anniversary" (1962), which got him an Oscar.

In 2014, Carrière received an honorary Oscar for Lifetime Achievement.
