Following the submission of a motion by the Chief Prosecutor's Office of Georgia, the Court of Appeals has declared unlawfully tried Gia Chanchaleishvili and Roman Chkaidze not guilty. The corresponding information has been disseminated by the investigation body. According to the Prosecutor's Office, the the case was re-investigated and instances of serious infringement upon the defendants' rights were detected.

" In accordance with the court verdict of 19 March 2012, Gia Chanchaleishvili and Roman Chkaidze were declared guilty into the case of fraudulent appropriation of the land lot, and allegedly, in 2004, when the issue of transferring the land's ownership was discussed in court, they hid information from the court as per which the land was owned by the Georgian Railway. In this manner, Gia Chanchaleishvili got hold of 450 square meters of land on Tsotne Dadiani Street, and Roman Chkaidze 114 square meters of land.

Actually, the investigation by the new department determined that the land owned by the defendants has never belonged to the Georgian Railway and, accordingly, the defendants have never misled the court.

New evidence obtained by the department following the re-investigation was fully approved by the court and based on it, the defendants were declared innocent," reads the statement.

The Prosecutor's Office has filed a motion with the court on reconsideration of 69 convicts' sentences, out of which 18 have been deemed political prisoners. In accordance with a court decision, 66 individuals have already been declared not guilty.
