According to the Special Penitentiary Service, the investigation has been launched after Giorgi Rurua was assaulted in prison.
The statement by the body says that convict Giorgi Rurua was taken out of his cell to meet his lawyer. At around 3:25 p.m., the convict, identified only as P.N., subjected Rurua to verbal and physical abuse. Penitentiary Service employees managed to break up a fight. However, Giorgi Rurua sustained bruises on his face. He was immediately provided with first aid. The investigation is underway.
Salome Samadashvili, a UNM member, released the information on Rurua's recent assault.
The Tbilisi City Court found Giorgi Rurua guilty on July 30 and sentenced him to four years in prison.
Giorgi Rurua, a shareholder of the Mtavari Arkhi (Main Channel), was arrested on November 18, 2019. Rurua was charged with the crime under Parts 3 and 4 of Article 236 of the Criminal Code, which envisages illegal purchase, possession, and carrying of firearms.
