Salome Samadashvili, a UNM member, said that Giorgi Rurua had been assaulted in prison. In Samadashvili's words, she is unaware of details; however, she doubts the government is involved in the crime. "The government employs similar methods. This is a political team at the helm of our country now," she said live on air on Formula TV.
The Tbilisi City Court found Giorgi Rurua guilty on July 30 and sentenced him to four years in prison.
Giorgi Rurua, a shareholder of the Mtavari Arkhi (Main Channel), was arrested on November 18, 2019. Rurua was charged with the crime under Parts 3 and 4 of Article 236 of the Criminal Code, which envisages illegal purchase, possession, and carrying of firearms.
