According to Beka Nemsitsveridze, the lawyer of Archil Gagnidze, convicted in the murder of football player Giorgi Shakarashvili, the verdict is illegal.
As he told reporters at the Mtskheta District Court, the defense will appeal the decision within the timeframe set by law.
"It is an illegal decision, which can not be substantiated following the law. Bidzina Sturua will probably be appointed to the Supreme Court soon in exchange for this decision. I did not expect this; how can I expect such a decision when there is no evidence and no justification? Of course, we will appeal. It does not fit into the law, nor logic; it does not fit into anything," Nemsitsveridze said.
According to him, after all, instances in Georgia, the case will go to the Strasbourg court.
"We have no illusions that the Court of Appeals or the Supreme Court will change things, but then we plan, of course, to appeal to the Strasbourg Court. We will probably get to the truth there," Nemsitsveridze said.
The judge sentenced Archil Gagnidze, Nikoloz Revazishvili, and Vakhtang Chikovani to 16 years in prison. The court also convicted two juveniles whose detention term has not been determined yet. The verdict of Z. Kh. and Akaki Kvrivishvili will be announced on March 16, 2021.
