The Prosecutor's Office responses to the Public Defender were dry, superficial and uninformative – said Nino Lomjaria, Public Defender  about Temirlan Machalikashvili’s case, who died during a special-forces raid.

The Public Defender thinks that the Parliament should summon the General Prosecutor and demand the explanation from him on why the investigation of Temirlan Machalikashvili's death during the special-forces raid has not been completed and whether all investigative processes are being conducted.

“Throughout the year, we tried to get information from the Prosecutor's Office about the progress of the investigation, but with the Prosecution's answers it was impossible to understand how effectively the investigative process was conducted as the information presented to us was dry, superficial and uninformative.” Lomjaria said.

The Public Defender believes that the Georgian Parliament should use all possible tools to determine the circumstances of Temirlan Machalikashvili's death.

“I think it will be very important to use the right you have with regards to the prosecution. In particular, listen to the annual report review. You should ask the General Prosecutor to submit the report and in this context you will be able to investigate cases that show systemic problems in the Prosecutor's Office, ”Lomjaria said.

The Ombudsman recalled statements made by the Prosecutor's Office in spring that the case had to be completed within the two coming months, but it has not been investigated yet.

“We see that more than two months have gone by but we do not know why the investigation of Temirlan Machalikashvili's death has not been completed. It is necessary for the Prosecutor's Office to present relevant explanations to the Parliament,” Lomjaria said.

The Public Defender will submit the annual report to Parliament.
