The Federation Council of Russia will raise the issue of Vazha Gaprindashvili's release, a doctor detained in Tskhinvali. Konstantin Kosachev, Chairman of the Foreign Affairs Committee of the Federation Council, stated this during a meeting with Nino Burjanadze, the Leader of the United Georgia-Democratic Movement.
"We understand that this is a painful topic in Georgia and we will definitely discuss the issue", Konstantin Kosachev said.
Vazha Gaprindashvili has been held in custody by the de facto government of Tskhinvali region since November 9. The de-facto government has accused the Georgians of illegally crossing the so-called border.
A hotline has been set up regarding the detention of a doctor, the European Union Monitoring Mission has also been informed and work is underway to free Gaprindashvili.
According to Gaprindashvili’s son, case materials were handed over to the court and a hearing is expected.
Vakhtang Gomelauri, the Minister of Internal Affairs of Georgia told reporters that the doctor may be released after a court decision.
