Saakashvili: 'Nobody owns the country, and the country owns the president'

Georgia's ex-president Mikheil Saakashvili has responded to Senator Jeanne Shaheen's statement.

"Shaheen visited me along with Senator Risch, and they thanked me, as everything went so peacefully. After this, I saw vice president Joe Biden, and after a few weeks, McCain invited us to his house. Dato Sakvarelidze and Giorgi Vashadze attended this meeting, and in their presence, McCain called me Eastern Europe's George Washington," Saakashvili said, adding that like Washington, who turned down the proposal of declaring himself a king to secure lifelong leadership of his country, he thinks that 'nobody owns the country, and the country owns the president.'

In the Senate, Senator Jeanne Shaheen spoke about the importance of a peaceful transition of power and brought Georgia's 2012 elections as an example.

In her address, Senator Shaheen said that she observed the 2012 elections, which the US defined as free and fair.
