Zalkaliani says he was unable to arrive in Baku as Georgian government resigned

Following the statement of the candidate for the Minister of Foreign Affairs of Georgia David Zalkaliani, on February 18-19, he was invited to the capital of Azerbaijan, Baku.

However, the scheduled meetings were postponed due to the resignation of the Georgian government.

As Zalkaliani says, the meetings were scheduled at the highest level. In Baku, Zalkaliani was supposed to meet with the foreign ministers of Azerbaijan and Turkey.

"Yesterday and the day before Yesterday, I was supposed to be on a visit to Azerbaijan, a country that is our partner. I was invited to Baku. In fact, I could not go there because of the processes taking place in the country and the resignation of the government.

Summit meetings were scheduled, and a meeting with a Turkish counterpart was also scheduled. This meeting was to be held in a trilateral format. The foreign ministers of Azerbaijan, Turkey, and Georgia were planned in December last year but did not occur due to the processes taking place there.

Of course, I had communication with both ministers, and they reacted to this with understanding. Both are ready to meet shortly and discuss topical issues for us," Zalkaliani said.

In his words, soon, he wants to go on visits to Azerbaijan and Turkey to discuss the processes taking place in the region.

He added that Georgia should not lag behind the processes underway in the region, but at the same time, this should not happen to the detriment of Georgia's interests.

"I am ready to make these visits shortly, since our participation in the processes taking place in the region is extremely important, despite the sensitive and delicate issues that exist there.

Let us keep up with the processes, of course, not at the expense of our state's interests. From this point of view, I even see the possibilities of what we can offer, and I am ready for dialogue with both of our neighbors," David Zalkaliani stated.
