Request of releasing Mikheil Saakashvili came as no surprise, says GD Chairman

Georgian Dream Chairman Irakli Kobakhidze says their request of releasing Mikheil Saakashvili did not come as a surprise.''Our prognosis came true. We were aware that as soon as Saakashvili was moved from the prison hospital, they would have required his release. When a man faces a six-year sentence, he must first serve his term. This is the rule of law,'' Kobakhidze stated.

A UNM member Eka Kherkheulidze said earlier that releasing Saakashvili from custody was at the top of their political agenda.

''Mikheil Saakashvili is a victim who has been subjected to torture and inhumane treatment. Naturally, he must be released and entitled to medical treatment as a free man,'' lawyer Dimitri Sadzaglishvili also said after visiting ex-president Mikheil Saakashvili to the Gori Military hospital.

Mikheil Saakashvili was moved from the Gldani prison facility to the Gori Military Hospital on 20 November after Justice Minister Rati Bregadze suggested that the hunger-striking ex-president be transferred there.

Saakashvili was detained on 1 October.
