Saakashvili's lawyer Gvaramia: Strasbourg Court met requirement on interim measure

Lawyer of ex-president Mikheil Saakashvili and Director-General of Mtavari Arkhi, Nika Gvaramia, said that the Strasbourg Court had met the requirement on the interim measure.

In Gvaramia's words, the court urged ex-president Saakashvili to call off the hunger strike, but by doing so, it admitted that he is on a hunger strike in the first place.

Gvaramia stressed that the court reminded the government of its duty to ensure the inmate's safety and adequate treatment, and if Saakashvili calls off the hunger strike, they must ensure high-level rehabilitation and treatment procedures for him.

''They have also tasked us to provide the Strasbourg Court with updated information on Mikheil Saakashvili's health condition and safety.

On 24 November, this information will be collated, and, in high likelihood, they will once again discuss the present situation.

The case is topical, and the court once again reminds the Georgian government that any violation of the procedure is non-incompliance with the convention and will be so deemed,'' Nika Gvaramia said at the special briefing.

Georgian ex-president Mikheil Saakashvili was transferred to Gldani prison from the Rustavi penitentiary establishment.

According to the ombudsman's representative, Mikheil Ghoghadze, Mikheil Saakashvili was transported to Gldani prison in an emergency vehicle which he was forced to leave. ''He was taken out of the vehicle forcefully,'' the ombudsman's representative said earlier.

As for Justice Minister Rati Bregadze, he said that ex-president Mikheil Saakashvili physically and verbally assaulted No18 penitentiary establishment employees.

The penitentiary establishment released the video footage showing Saakashvili leaving his prison cell, claiming that he did so willfully.

Late at night, Saakashvili's lawyer publicized the ex-president's letter in which he said that he was subject to verbal and physical assault, with someone also trying to jab him.

Saakashvili's lawyers state that the former president is not provided with adequate conditions to have his safety and health protected.

The State Inspector's Service launched an investigation into a possible inhumane treatment to which the third president of Georgia was allegedly subjected.

Ex-president Mikheil Saakashvili, who was detained on Oct 1, has been on a hunger strike for 41 days now.
