Akaki Zoidze, the Head of the Healthcare and Social Issues Committee, says he is ready to spend a week in Tskhinvali prison as hostage instead of Georgian doctor Vazha Gaprindashvili, who was detained by de facto South Ossetia.
"Vazha Gaprindashvili remains a hostage, this can’t be called an illegal detention or anything at all, this man has been taken hostage for his patriotism. According to the initiative issued by the doctors, they are ready to replace Gaprindashvili as hostage for a week. I want to join them", Zoidze said.
According to the so-called de facto South Ossetia State Security Service, Vazha Gaprindashvili, a Georgian doctor, was actively involved in the 2008 war and served as a captain in the Georgian Armed Forces Medical Service.
Vazha Gaprindashvili has been held in custody by the de facto government of Tskhinvali region since November 9. Demonstrations in support of Gaprindashvili have been held in the city and regions. His colleagues and adherents staged a White Lab Coats Demonstration outside their clinics. Three more persons detained together with the doctor were released after paying financial penalty. Criminal investigation of the case is in process charging illegal borderline breach.
