Due to the spread of the new Coronavirus (COVID - 19), which was officially declared a pandemic yesterday by the World Health Organization (WHO), many sporting events around the world have been postponed and canceled.

According to the decision of the Ministry of Education, Science, Culture and Sport and the Inter-Agency Council sports events will temporarily be suspended in Georgia.

"According to the joint decision of the Government of Georgia and the Rugby Union, the match between Georgia and Russia on March 14 at Mikheil Meskhi Stadium will take place without spectators. The International Judo Federation (IJF) officially canceled the event at the Tbilisi Olympic Palace on March 27-29.

Numerous international tournaments should have taken place in March; however, with the decision of the relevant international federations and the recommendation of the World Health Organization, these events got canceled or postponed. Consequently, our athletes stopped training sessions and are returning home," the statement said.

From today, the Georgian government has moved to a state of emergency.

There are 24 cases of coronavirus confirmed in Georgia.

Currently, there are 295 people in quarantine and 49 in inpatient care.
